Shopping in Flintshire
Market Days in Flintshire are as follows: Mold Saturdays and Wednesdays (well worth the visit especially for fruit and vegetables), Connah’s Quay on Thursday, Flint on Friday, Holywell on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Farmers' Markets are held in Flintshire every first Saturday of the month, 9am to 2pm at the Church Hall, King Street, Mold; every third Sunday of the month, 9am to 1pm at the Welsh College of Horticulture in Northop; and every second Friday of the month, 10am to 3pm at Grosvenor Garden Centre, Belgrave (near Chester).
Tesco, Adsa and now Sainsburys have supermarkets in Flintshire. There are also shopping centres in Broughton and Flint. This is also in addition to independent in-town shops who are under threat from the big guys. Flint alone will boast seven supermarkets.
Castles in Flintshire
Flintshire has four castles: Hawarden Old Castle which dates back to the Iron Age, Caergwrle Castle circa 1277, Ewloe Castle started in 1257 and Flint Castle started 1277.
Flintshire Politics
On a political front, Flintshire has remained a Labour stronghold since the mid 1990's in both local government and UK representation. Government Minister, David Hanson represents the Delyn constituency and Mark Tami represents the Alyn and Deeside constituency. Both being staunch supporters of UK Government policy.
Living and Working in Flintshire
Most of Flintshire is rural with some spectacular views across the Dee Estuary to the Wirral and Liverpool. However, the county also has a significant level of industry including Airbus, Toyota and Corus plus two gas fired power stations and two paper mills. With unemployment around 2% and higher average wages (against the Wales average), Flintshire is a good place to work.
Despite the heavy industry, the air quality in Flintshire is by no means the worst in Wales. The good news is that it is estimated to improve in Flintshire according to the UK Air Quality Archive.
Flintshire also has some of the cleanest beaches in Wales (yes we do have beaches!) Gronant and Talacre beaches have both been awarded the Yellow Seaside Award Flags for cleanliness.
According to the Met Office, Flintshire is the driest county in Wales. On average, less that 30 inches of rain falls along the North Wales coast from the Dee estuary to Llandudno. Apparently this is because Flintshire falls inside a 'rain shadow'.
The River Dee runs through Flintshire and forms part of the boundary between Wales and England. Starting in Snowdonia, the Dee runs for 70 miles and culminates in an estuary between the Welsh coast and the Wirral.
When driving in Flintshire be aware of your speed at all times. North Wales Police are very, VERY keen to apprehend speeding motorists.
Flintshire has two newspapers the Flintshire Evening Leader and the Flintshire Chronicle. The Evening Leader is a daily newspaper with a circulation of about 10000. The Chronicle is published every Friday and has a circulation of approximately 7700. Both papers cover the usual local news, mainly human interest, sport and crime. Political coverage and investigative journalism is alas a thing of the past.
Entertainment in Flintshire
We can't really say that Flintshire is a major centre for nightlife. However, we do have Clwyd Theatr Cymru (Theatre Clwyd) which has an international reputation for staging highly acclaimed and thrilling drama based in Mold. Theatre Clwyd is the only place you can watch a film in Flintshire.
Macbeth is currently showing at the theatre until 24th May. An excellent performance of Shakespeare's 'Scottish Play'. Visually powerful.
Flintshire has the National Centre for Ice Sports in Wales facility in Queensferry. Flintshire also has three swimming pools in Connah's Quay, Flint and Holywell as part of a network of nine leisure centres.
If you like fast food, then Flintshire is the place to be. It seems that every other shop is a chippy! That said, there are several fine restaurants serving Indian, Chinese and European cuisine along with good old British fayre.
Flintshire has never had its shortage of public houses - until now. Recently there has been a string of pub closures which is reflecting a national trend.
The one thing you can do in abundance in Flintshire is play golf. There ar 11 golf courses in the county.
